If you’re planning to buy Spanish red wine, you might be wondering what food it’s best to pair with your chosen tipple.A number of expert sommeliers have been talking to Decanter about the best flavours to enjoy alongside a glass of a range of Spanish wines.

The publication noted that a Rioja is typically paired with the likes of roast pork, chorizo and aged cheese – all classic Spanish flavours. However, it suggested trying a Gran Reserva Rioja alongside grilled pigeon with white truffle.

Guillermo Cruz, who won the Best Sommelier of Spain in 2014 and is the head sommelier at Mugaritz restaurant, commented: “The protein of the meat with the tannins of the wine make one of the most classic and elegant combinations.”

Meanwhile, Manuel Jimenez, who won Best Sommelier of Spain in 2017 and is sommelier at La Cava de Pyrene, praised the lighter red wines from Galicia.

He described this kind of Spanish red wine as especially “food-friendly”, noting that these go particularly well with lighter dishes and Asian cuisine. They are a great option to drink while enjoying sushi, for instance.

Away from Spanish reds, cava from the nation is growing in popularity, with Mr Jimenez noting that Cava Paraje Calificado is wonderful when served alongside roasted lamb with aromatic herbs and roast apple or plum.

If you want to learn more about the variety of Spanish wines available, you may want to head to London next month for the Wines from Spain annual tasting event, where 1,200 wines from over 300 wineries will be available to sample, the Drinks Business revealed.
